Connecting to Success! The delegates at the 3rd Annual MindShare Learning EdTech Leadership Summit at York U on November 7, 2012.

Dear Thought Leader,

I’m thrilled to share our November MSL Report which comes to you in real time as we’re hosting our 3rd Annual EdTech Leadership Summit. Follow our livestream or Twitter hashtag #MSLsummit.

Our Cross Canada spotlight on Alberta coincidentally comes on the heels of the Alberta Government’s New Education Act that will set its provincial course for 21st century learning. In equally exciting news, as a member of the C21 Canada team, we are pleased to announce that C21’s national framework for learning, “Shifting Minds”, is now available for download online in both English and French.

In conjunction with our Summit, one of our goals in this issue is to bring clarity to the evolving digital learning ecosystem in Canada. You have the benefit of a curated global perspective from my recent travels and conference appearances including: our EdTech Summit, the Frankfurt Book Fair, CEA annual conference, ECOO12, and the World Congress on IT in Montreal.

Some other highlights to check out in this issue include:

We are pleased to welcome Natalie Gilbert and Mary Pat O’Meara to our team, who bring journalism, film, and teaching expertise to MindShare Learning.

We hope you enjoy this issue of the MindShare Learning Report. As always, we welcome your comments and encourage you to share your success stories with us!

In closing, please keep us in mind when you’re hosting your next event. We’ve proudly supported and nurtured learning communities including ECOO12, When Faith Meets Pedagogy, EdCampTO, EdCamp Ottawa and EdNET12.

Until then, keep the learning curve steep!

P.S. The lucky winner of the iPad mini from our national EdTech Teacher survey is...

Cross Canada Spotlight on Alberta

In Alberta, Canada’s highest performing province on the 2009 PISA reading and science sections, the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI) is a grant given to school boards to use at their discretion.

“The idea is to get innovative and think outside the box,” says president of the Alberta School Boards Association Jacquie Hansen in an email to Globalnews.ca. “Many schools zeroed in on an achievement gap, like numeracy or literacy and spent all the money on new initiatives focused of these things. Others used it for technology, others high school completion.”

Hansen says delegates from many countries have come to see the work enabled by AISI including some from Finland and China, two of the highest scoring countries.

Alberta schools also prioritize public engagement and working closely with government, the provincial teachers union, superintendents, business officials and parent association to build relationships and “foster collaboration with the focus on the student.” Hansen says education is all about relationships and the human condition.

Insight into EdCamp Toronto
By Stephen Hurley, @Stephen_Hurley

When most participants arrived at York University's Winter College on Saturday, September 29th they were prepared with coffee in hand and questions in mind. They knew in advance that coming to EdCamp Toronto was not about sitting around for the day listening to someone else talk about their vision of education. Instead, they knew that they would be invited to become actively involved in conversations based on the questions and ideas about teaching, learning, technology and school that they brought with them.

The EdCamp Toronto event is one of nearly 100 international gatherings being held this year, a number that has continued to grow since the movement's beginnings just two years ago. Based on a vision for dynamic, participant-driven professional learning, EdCamp Toronto has been committed to the ancient practice of starting with the burning questions. As the day starts, questions that resonate most with participants in attendance are brought forward and the conversations begin. There are no session presenters, no "outside" experts to dispense wisdom; the whole spirit of the event is that  by inviting teachers, parents, administrators, community-thinkers, and members of the interested public to walking around the questions, a new and organic type of learning will take place.

At this year's event, a harvesting team worked throughout the day to capture the thinking of each group, with the goal of being able to find the connective tissue among conversations. The early results of this process will soon be posted on the edcampto.org website.

Through the generous support of organizations like MindShare Learning, York University, The Canadian Education Association, Pearson Education, The Tapscott Group, Microsoft Learning, NearPod, Softchalk and Cedarvale Consulting, EdCamp Toronto was able to maintain the vision of free access to a day of exhilarating and lively conversations about education. And it all began with the questions!

Shifting Minds: A Review

A Short Overview of “Shifting Minds: A 21st Century Vision of Public Education for Canada.”
By Timothy Gard, Educator, Toronto District School Board
@MindShareK12

The 21st Century skills movement is not new. Many different groups, organizations and countries have produced their documents, outlined their philosophies and articulated why it’s important to move education systems out of an older paradigm and into a newer one. Of course, this ‘shift’ is required because the world is changing. If a country hopes to compete economically in a growing and more open global economy then there’s a need to ensure that requisite citizens are prepared to function with the proper skills needed to keep a country strong and vibrant. C21 Canada is an organization made up of various groups and individuals who have championed Canada’s understanding and justification for moving our systems of education into this arena of paradigm shifting. And they’ve produced a document entitled, “Shifting Minds: A 21st Century Vision of Public Education for Canada” to prove it.

Self-Directed Professional Development: Cultivating & Curating Authentic Learning Experiences

By Joseph Romano, OCT, BFA, B.Ed, M.Ed, @romanoj

Most commonly understood as the growth of professional practice and knowledge, Professional Development (PD) in the field of Education has allowed teachers and educational professionals opportunities to broaden their pedagogical and instructional strategies. PD, in many ways, allows the teacher to become the learner who takes part in crafting knowledge focused on a subject taught or skill set to be developed.

Cope and Kalantzis (2010) state, “a revolution is occurring in education. This revolution is being fuelled in part by the new information and communication technologies. Fundamentally, however, the change is in the human relations of learning.”
Yet, with a PD structure that is typically systemically based – a process which is ordered, mandated, and implemented by the powers that be – are our teachers given opportunities to learn in authentic, self-directed ways in new spaces, using innovative information and communication technologies?
